Red Barn/Prairie Winter, Art Card

Regular price $5.00

Red Barn/Prairie Winter, 1986, by Fritz Stehwien - Greeting or Art Card (blank inside)

The iconic red barn was once common across the North American prairies, and came to signify the 20th century farmstead. With harsh climate conditions constantly wearing these buildings down, these charming barns are becoming an increasingly rare sight, replaced by more practical but less visually appealling farm architecture. Coming from Europe, Stehwien was instantly attracted to these bright buildings dotting the prairies. Contrasting beautifully with the white winter snow and complemented by a multi-coloured sunset, this motif was one he painted frequently. With his wife Waltraude as navigator, the pair drove across Saskatchewan in frigid conditions, all for the sake of finding that perfect image of the scenic prairie winter. This original was painted with watercolour in 1986. Many similar motifs are available for purchase in the gallery. Inquire at bstehwien@sasktel.net
